Create a Category in WordPress

How to Create Category in WordPress?

After watching the video, you can refer to these footnotes to have even a better understanding of how to create a category in WordPress:

To create categories, as usual, we have to log in to our WordPress Dashboard. After logging in to our WordPress Dashboard, move on to the left sidebar, hover your cursor over ‘Posts’. When you will hover on Posts, a small dialog box will open up. In that dialog box, click on the option of ‘Categories’.

The Category page will open up from where you can create the Categories for your website. You will see that there is a category named ‘Uncategorized’ which is set as default when you install WordPress.

In the first box, type the name of your category, let’s say ‘Tech’. In the second box, type the slug of your category. So, if you don’t know, basically a slug is the part of the URL which explains the page content. If you want you can keep the name of the category and slug the same.

In the third option, it will ask if there is a parent category for the category you’re creating. So, if it doesn’t have a parent category, keep it by default ‘None’. And if it does have a parent category, select the coressponding parent category.

Then in the 4th box, you can type in the description for the category. If you want you can leave the description box empty. After filling all the required boxes, click on the button ‘Add New Category’. And as soon as you click the button, you will see that the category you just created is added into the list of all the other categories.

Creating a Sub Category

So, now let’s see how you can create a sub-category for any parent category in WordPress. To create a sub-category, you will need to follow the same procedure as followed previously with just one little change. In the third box, instead of selecting ‘None’, you will need to select the corresponding parent category.

So, let’s see how we do it. First, put the name of the category. Then enter the slug. And after that select the parent category. In this case, the parent category is ‘Tech’. So, I’ll just select ‘Tech’. Again, if you want you can leave the description box empty. And then finally click on the button ‘Add New Category’.

And then you will see that your subcategory will be added under its parent category. Also, if you want to learn more about WordPress, you need to check out WordPress tutorial on Digital Abhi Blog.
